Session 3: “Called to Serve”

Readings from the Gospel of John Thursday, March 12, at 10:30 am

This four-part Bible study has given us an opportunity to examine the ways in which we are being called by God. First, in January, we read how God called the prophets in the Old Testament times. In February, we looked at how Jesus called his disciples during his ministry, including the amazing call of Saul after his resurrec1on.

This month we will discuss what we are being called to do. In par1cular, we will see how God’s call is a call to serve others, and how the call to love God is linked to the call to love our neighbors. We will examine Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of the call to respond to individual need. We will look at Joseph’s stewardship in Egypt as an example of the call to respond to community needs. Finally, we’ll revisit the story of Esther as an example of the call to respond to poli1cal need.

The material we use is printed in the ELCA’s Gather Magazine, to which individuals may subscribe.
